Eamon Gilmore, EU Special Representative for Human Rights

Eamon underscored the rise of illiberal democracy around the world and the need for strong democratic institutions. He mentioned his own work as EU Special Representative, meeting with governments and raising human rights concerns. He highlighted the importance of public institutions and organisations in the deliberative process.

Eamon also mentioned the fragility of democracy and the need for freedom of the media, freedom of expression and freedom of ideas. He emphasized civil society in particular for its role in keeping democracy alive.
