Deepening Cooperation and Connections on the Island and the Role for ACESA Members

Aingeal O’Donoghue, Assistant Secretary General, Department of the Taoiseach & Head of the Shared Island Unit

28th April 2021

Members were joined at our April event by our guest Aingeal O’Donoghue. Aingeal gave an outline of the work of the Shared Island Unit in the Department of An Taoiseach. The Unit aims to harness the full potential of the Good Friday Agreement and enhance cooperation, connection and mutual understanding on the island and engage with all communities and traditions to build consensus around a shared future.

This involves working with the Northern Ireland Executive and the British Government; further developing the all-island economy, deepening North/South cooperation, and investing in the Northwest and border regions and fostering constructive and inclusive dialogue and a comprehensive programme of research to support the building of consensus around a shared future on the island.

Aingeal thanked many of the agencies led by ACESA members who are already working very closely with their counterparts in Northern Ireland or are leading agencies with a full island remit.
